Stop at Hilo (Hawai’i) Day 1

Nov 11, 2017

The ship arrives at Hilo, Hawai’i, and we embark on an optional tour for the day.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park encompasses two active volcanoes including 1274m Mt. Kilauea, and is
registered as a World Heritage Site. A visit to the Jaggar Museum introduces us to some of the legends
that inhabit this land.

We board the bus again and head for Thurston Lava Tube. Spanning a length of over 500m, the lava tube
was created around 500 years ago by lava that cooled and hardened on the surface, while the still-molten
inside flowed out.

Leaving Thurston behind, we climb up to Kilauea Iki overlook where we are treated with a contrasting
view of the wide-open land and sky. Our first day on Hawai’i is spent in awe at the power and beauty of
the earth we call home.
