Celebrating entry into force of the High Seas Treaty

Peace Boat’s ship sails as a flagship to promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among the 17 goals, Peace Boat places particular emphasis on Goal 14, “Life Below Water,” and has implemented a variety of initiatives, including inviting young people engaged in marine conservation efforts to join the voyages. January 17, 2026, marks the historic day on which the United Nations High Seas Treaty (also known as the BBNJ Agreement) entered into force—an agreement concluded to protect marine life in the high seas (international waters), which cover more than half of the Earth’s surface. To commemorate this significant occasion at sea, participants gathered wearing something blue, symbolizing their shared commitment to protecting the richness of the oceans, and took a commemorative photograph together. As the ship was sailing through the high seas at that very moment, it became a rare and meaningful opportunity to convey the importance of the United Nations High Seas Treaty directly from the ocean.
