To the ancient capital of the Inca Empire

Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, is an ancient city that once flourished as the capital of the Inca Empire. The entire city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is dotted with countless historical landmarks. One of the places we visited was the Church of Santo Domingo, built atop the finely crafted stone foundations of an important Inca temple once known as Qorikancha, or the Temple of the Sun. The church stands on these precisely fitted Inca stone walls, powerfully conveying the layers of history embedded in the site. As we explored locations that tell the story of Cusco’s past—its striking blend of two cultures and its beautiful cloisters—we gained a deeper appreciation of the city’s rich and complex history.
