About 8,000 people live on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) today. In Hanga Roa, the island’s only village, everyday life unfolds against the striking backdrop of the standing Moai, offering a glimpse of the island’s present that feels quite different from what is visible just through tourism alone. On this journey, we were able to see both the Moai statues, as well as the mysterious and profound history and culture of Rapa Nui. Hoping that these mystical scenes will be preserved and passed on to future generations, we returned to the ship with a wistful heart.
