Guest Educator Hanagaki Rumi was beneath the mushroom cloud when the atomic bomb struck Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Marking the 81st anniversary of the bombing, Ms Hanagaki shared her firsthand account of what she witnessed as a five-year-old child, along with her lifelong dedication to advocating for a nuclear-free world. Reflecting on the scars of war seen during our recent port call in Hiroshima alongside Ms Hanagaki’s poignant testimony offered passengers a deeply meaningful opportunity to remember the past and contemplate a peaceful future together.
