UN SDGs and Peace Boat’s 40th Anniversary Celebration in NYC

Peace Boat’s MV Pacific World sailed into New York City on September 30, 2023, after the UN General Assembly High-level Week, on the momentous occasion of the ship’s 40th anniversary. 500+ guests joined the “Sailing for Change – Partnerships for SDGs Celebration” held onboard, an event focusing on climate action, ocean stewardship, and peacebuilding.

In her keynote speech, UN Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming emphasized the connection between peace and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The event featured panels with youth, diplomats, business leaders, and scientists sharing initiatives for a more sustainable world, including those related to the Blue Economy.

Youth Ocean Leaders from the Ocean Policy Research Institute who traveled onboard Peace Boat presented their experiences in marine protection and ecosystem restoration during the voyage. The event also showcased sustainable fashion and a marine garbage upcycling project led by participants onboard.

Traditional Japanese cultural performances, music, and networking opportunities added to the celebration. As shared in the speech of Under-Secretary-General Fleming, “All hands on deck!”.
