The ship reached its second Hokkaido destination: the port city of Hakodate. Under clear, bright skies—just like the previous day in Otaru—passengers eagerly set out to explore the city. As a port town that welcomed a wave of foreign influences following its opening in the late Edo period, Hakodate is steeped in international history. Visitors fully immersed themselves in the city’s exotic charm by touring key landmarks, including Goryokaku—a star-shaped Western-style fortress famous as a battlefield of the Boshin War—along with waterfront red-brick warehouses from the Meiji era and retro Western-style residences scattered across the hillside Yamate area.
