95th Highlights: Civil Society in the UK
27th Sep. 2017
Guest Navigator Abi Connolley is on board to talk about women’s roles in civil movements in the UK. “From people refusing the draft to WWI to demonstrations over the Iraq War in 2003, we have fought for peace in many ways over the past 100 years.” Abi details civic movements in the UK using slides and examples like the anti-nuclear movements triggered by hydrogen bomb tests, and the man who lived on the street in front of the UK parliament for ten years. During question time, she was posed the difficult question of what we can do for world peace. “The first step is making friends with people from different cultures.”, she replied with a smile. Through the history of civil movements in the UK, we realized the importance of action in creating a peaceful world.
