[101st Cruise Report]The secret of the colourful logo on the side of the ship
May.12th
On the side of the Ocean Dream is a large, colourful, circular logo. This is the symbol of the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Goals which is a set of 17 goals for sustainability and the environment laid out by the UN as part of the 2030 Agenda, and Peace Boat is certified as an official campaign ship of the SDGs. But today’s event sought to explain precisely what the SDGs and what they consist of.
The SDGs are based on the idea that no one is left behind, and targets everyone in the world, and onboard there are a number of different campaigns to promote the SDGs. For example, to reduce the use of plastic the straws onboard have been replaced with paper straws, or only washing towels when needed to reduce water consumption onboard, there are many different things that can be done. One point made in the lecture is that “knowing is the first step” and indeed just by having greater knowledge people can act and behave more flexibly. The next SDGs-related event will be a workshop on gender equality.
