[99th Cruise Report]The Northern Lights

Oct.19th

Axel Óskarsson, a guest educator who has been onboard Peace Boat twice in the past, is the owner of “I am Iceland” a tour-planning company aimed at having visitors explore the vast wilderness of Iceland. As our chance to see the Northern Lights approaches, we will have Axel talk a little bit about the Northern Lights. Using his knowledge of astrology and earth sciences, he has come up with his own method of analyzing where the Northern Lights might appear using weather and magnetic field data. He will be talking about what to look forward to when seeing the Northern Lights, and also showing some of the photos he has taken in the past.

We have entered the region on earth that falls within 65 degrees latitude called the Aurora Belt, where we have the highest chance of seeing one of the highlights of this journey, the Northern Lights. On the 19th at around 22:00 (local time), we were able to see a hint of the Northern Lights in the sky. We have a few more opportunities to see the Northern Lights as we continue sailing through the Aurora Belt, so we are all very excited for another sighting.
