[98th Cruise Report]A Special View from the Boat — the Strait of Messina

June.8th

After leaving Greece, we sailed toward Italy. Today we were ready to pass through the Strait of Messina. It is located almost exactly in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and is only 3km wide, so we can see the beautiful banks of Italy.

There are many volcanoes around Italy, and three of them are under watch by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) for the next ten years because they are active. We passed by one of them, Mt. Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands. We saw smoke coming out of it. There are people still living on the island now!
